This field trip was an experiment. Would MC101 students turn
out on a Sunday to ride L.A.'s fledgling light rail system to the Watts
Towers, site of an annual jazz festival?
Why yes, they would. We had a nice turnout. |
Los Angeles is developing a clean, comfortable
light rail system, but middle-class people from the outlying areas tend
to not ride it. So it was a little unnatural for car-bound MC101
students to ride the train, but these did.

Once at the site of the historic Watts
Towers, some of us took a guided tour. |

This drum line was outstanding |
| Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was at this event. He did not comment on what the presence of MC101 students meant for the future of the city. |
|
The festival also featured a food court, so
no one went hungry. |

Oh yes, and the jazz was pretty good too.
