OBJECTIVES:   Who are those scouts wearing a white sash with a red arrow at official meetings?  They are members of the Order of the Arrow (OA) - scouting’s National Honor Society.  The purpose of the OA is to recognize scout campers who best exemplify the scout oath and law in their daily lives; maintain and promote camping traditions and spirit; and to emphasis the Scout practice of service and leadership to others.  For more information about the society visit the Verdugo Hills Council Chapter #249 website at http://www.spe-le-yai.org/

SPE-LE-YAI is the OA council Lodge of the Verdugo Hills Council #249.  Our lodge totem is the howling coyote which means -  Shoshone for “Song of the Coyote”.  There are many good activities for members to share.

OA Monthly Lodge Meetings - Reminder

We are very lucky in our troop to have so many OA members. We encourage ALL members to attend the monthly OA Lodge meetings at the Verdugo Council.  They are every first Thursdays of each month at 7:30pm.  Snacks are served and there are open discussions on various scouting issues which helps us  with ideas about scouting activities within our troop.  Again, snacks are served.

Mark your calendar for the next lodge meeting on Thursday, November 3, 2005.  It will be a toy drive.  Donated toys are for Apache teenagers on the White Mountain Indian Reservation.  Mr. Adams will bring hot apple cider.  We have several items of discussion - Dellon has volunteered to be our Trade-O-Ree Chief, that is coming in the Spring.  The lodge is also still discussing whether or not to end Ordeals on Saturday night.  Our new staff advisor is Mr. Tony Enterante.

Our December 1 lodge meeting will be a fund raiser at Shakees in La Crescenta.  The meeting will start at 7:00 PM and will involve a gift exchange ($10 items).

  BROTHERHOOD CANDIDATES:

This is a reminder to all Ordeal level members in the lodge.  After a short 10 month membership, you can become a Brotherhood candidate !  It is not that hard.  To receive the Brotherhood Honor, it means that you have sealed your membership in the Order.  The list of requirements to earn your Brotherhood are located in the Order of the Arrow Handbook you received when you completed your Ordeal.  The Council encourages the Arrowmen from Troop 101 to seal their ties by completing the requirements and attending a ceremony.  For further information, contact Mr. Jim Adams at (818) 248-1613.

  FALL ORDEAL:

Our Fall Ordeal was September 16-18, 2005 at Camp Verdugo Oaks.  Both Colin and Jackson Turcotte attended and were officially inducted into the society along with five other scouts.  They demonstrated their willingness to follow the Arrow.    They dug a ditch, split wood, hauled trash and did many other important duties for the camp.  Way to go guys.  The next Ordeal will be scheduled in the Spring.  We encourage other Troop 101 scouts to learn more about the OA and attend troop meetings and participate in activities.
