Our services and how they work

The Learning Center offers Math tutoring by appointment. Drop-in tutoring is also available when Math tutors do not have appointments scheduled.

You must be enrolled in a Math course at GCC to receive Math tutoring.

Since we cannot always accommodate same day appointments, please try to make your appointments several days in advance. All appointments are 30 minutes; however, if the tutor does not have any other appointments and there is no one else waiting for a Math tutor, then the tutor may continue working with you.

How to make an appointment with a Math tutor

1. Come to the front desk in Learning Center to schedule an appointment.
2. Call the Learning Center to request an appointment at 818-240-1000 ext. 5333 or 5330.

If you phone us to request an appointment, be sure to include the following information:

• Your name and GCC student ID number
• A couple of choices for the days and times when you would like an appointment
• The name of the class for which you need tutoring (Math 101, Math 145, Math 110 etc.)
• A phone number where we can call you to confirm your appointment

Tips for your tutoring session

Math tutors are GCC students who have been recommended by their Math instructors. The common goal of all the tutors is to help you become a more confident, independent learner. You can expect to be actively involved in your tutoring sessions. Tutors are not here to do your homework for you; they are here to help you learn how to identify and address certain difficulties you may be having in your Math classes.

To get the most out of your tutoring session, here are some ways to help you work more effectively with your tutor:

· Be prepared to discuss with your tutor the various difficulties you are having in your Math class.

· You may not be able to cover everything in one session, so set your own specific goals for the session. Are you having trouble with a particular problem? Do you need to discuss certain concepts? Are you preparing for a test and need to review?

· Plan ahead for tutoring sessions and allow yourself plenty of time to work independently after you have met with a tutor. For example, do not show up 30 minutes before your Math test and expect a tutor to be available.

The Learning Center has a variety of Math videotapes, which may be checked out or viewed in the Center.

The CAI Lab (AD 226) offers the Passkey computer program, a self-paced tutorial covering basic math through algebra.

If you have a quick Math question, the Math Science Center in AS 103 offers drop-in tutoring.

• Monday –Thursday: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
• Friday: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
• Saturday: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
