Required Texts:
Student Workbook for English 182. The main textbook is the PassKey Software installed
on the computers in the Learning Center. A paperback dictionary is recommended.
English 182 is a course designed to help students review and to build college-level
vocabulary. This course, which is individualized, self-paced, diagnostic-prescriptive,
and interactive, introduces the student to various word attack skills to promote
easier recognition and understanding of college-level vocabulary. Credit will be awarded
upon completion of two levels. There is extensive use of computer assisted instruction
to drill vocabulary and to practice skills covered in class. This is a credit/no credit course.
Topics Covered:
General study skills, vocabulary building through prefixes and roots and context clues,
phonics skills and use of the dictionary.
All of the course work for this self-paced class takes place in the Glendale College
Learning Center (AD 232). See Mr.Doyle the first week.
Registration and Drops:
It is your responsibility to see that you are officially registered or dropped from
a class. If you do not show up during the first week of class, you may be dropped.
You may also be dropped for excessive absences during the course of the semester.
If you stop coming without dropping officially, you may get a "No-Credit" in this class.
Expectations:
English 182 is a self-managed auto-tutorial course using the materials in the Glendale
College Learning Center. We expect you to check in to the Center and to work on
your assignments at least twice each week throughout the semester or until you have
finished the course work. We expect you to meet with Mr. Doyle, the teacher of record,
at least once during the first week. We expect you to complete at least 16 hours
of lab work this semester, and improve at least two levels as measured in the PassKey
pre and post-test system. This is a credit/no-credit class. You cannot pass if you
stop doing course work each week, fail the tests written into the program or fail
to complete everything. We expect you to show that you are serious about the class
by being respectful of the learning environment, and showing up regularly unless you are
seriously ill. Please turn off any beepers or cell phones while in the Learning
Center.
Getting Credit:
In order to get credit for your course work, you must check in at the door of the
Learning Center with your Glendale College Picture I.D. each time you do your work.
You may work any time that the Lab is open. Tell them that you are doing course
work for English 182 or you may not be properly credited. A report of your hours in the
lab goes to Mr.Doyle weekly. You may review with him or staff how many hours are
credited to your record. All work on the PassKey system including lessons passed,
failed, attempted and redone is recorded also and a printed report is given to Mr. Doyle each
week.
Academic Honesty
Mr. Doyle follows the official college policy concerning cheating and plagiarism.
Working from Home
Some, but not all of the course work may be done from home if you have access to the
Internet. Let Mr. Doyle know if you are planning to do this. Set your browser to:
http://english.glendale.cc.ca.us and follow the directions to the English 182 homepage.
Class Schedule
Most of the course work for this class is to be done in the Glendale College Learning
Center. While in the Center, you will be accessing lessons using the Center computers
through two programs, PassKey and Netscape.
The PassKey software is diagnostic/prescriptive, i.e. it will give you frequent tests
to find your ability level. If you pass a certain level, it automatically allows
you to skip ahead. If the program skips you ahead, then you may not need to do all
the listed assignments. You may find some of the earlier assignments quite easy.
The work on the Netscape will be accessed from the English 182 web page at http://english.glendale.cc.ca.us.
This page is easily reached through the local homepage which displays whenever Netscape
is launched on the Learning Center computers.
You may do the work week by week, or jump ahead to future weeks, but do not fall behind
more than one week.

USING the MATERIALS
How to Use PassKey
Sit down at one of the computers in the Learning Center or in the CAI Lab. If the
PassKey program is not already running, tap on the PassKey icon. When everything
is warmed up, a screen like this should appear:

Andy or Maria, who manage the CAI Lab will give you your user name and password.

and do the lessons in the order presented in the schedule. The software is designed
to be diagnostic/prescriptive, which means that the software will give you a series
of questions at the start of each lesson. If you do well in the lesson, the computer will automatically skip ahead to an area that you need to work on. You work continuously
on the lessons and periodic reports are sent to the instructor. The program keeps
track of where you left off, but only if you close the program correctly. When you are finished with an assignment press the F10
key along the top of the keyboard to save your work and then hit Quit
. Don't turn off the computer. Report any computers that don't work.
