How to Do These Assignments
Most of the work of this class is done in the Learning Center using the PassKey software on our computers. Here are the steps your should take to get started:

  1. Check-in at the Learning Center door with your GCC student ID number.
  2. If this is your first time, say hello to Mr.Doyle in his office.
  3. If it's your first time, see Andy or Maria in the CAI Lab (the room with all the computers) for your log-in name and password.
  4. Sit down at a computer and start the PassKey program. More about how to do this is at this link .
  5. Use your login and password.
  6. Choose the READING link on the menu.
  7. Work through the lessons in order.
  8. When you are finished with one lesson, move on to the next.
  9. When you are finished, tap on the stop button so that the software will remember where you left off.
  10. Check-out of the lab as you leave.
  11. Next time do steps 4-9 again.

At first the lessons may seem quite easy. The software is testing you to see where you need help. When you start making mistakes, the software will register that and start giving you lessons in your weak areas. Concentrate on finishing the PassKey assignments. The items in the first row are supplementary assignments

    17 Turn to page19-23 in your text to the articles "Vocabulary Skills", "Basic Phonics Rules" and "Basic Syllable Rules". Read the article, then take this quiz on line .
    18 Turn to page 24-26 in your text to the article "Mark these syllables". Mark the vowels as LONG, SHORT, SILENT, or R-CONTROLLED, then check your work here , here , and here .
    19 Turn to page 27-29 in your text to the articles "Long and Short Vowel Practice" and "Long and Short Vowel". Underline the word in each pair that has the SHORT vowel sounds, answer the questions on page 29, then check your work here , here , and here .
    20 Turn to page 31-32 in your text to the article "Syllables Practice". Divide each word into syllables, then check your work here and here .
    21 Turn to page 34-39 in your text to the article "Roots and Prefixes from Greek and Latin". Using the Dictionary on pages 49-52, copy a definition for each Greek or Latin root word, then take the quiz at here .
